Medical Insurance

For the time of your stay in Germany, it is mandatory that you have medical insurance coverage. According to the type and conditions of your stay at DESY, you can insure yourself in different ways:

1. You are (going to be) a regular employee of DESY:
You will be insured through one of the statutory health insurance funds (Gesetzliche Krankenkasse), such as AOK, Techniker Krankenkasse and others. You typically apply for membership in one fund once you have arrived.

2. You are a guest scientist, a Ph.D. student receiving a scholarship, or a DESY summer student:
In this case, you will have to register with a foreign travel insurance. Some insurance products are designed especially for foreign guest scientists and their family members. To avoid problems with your visa extension in Germany, we strongly recommend that you register with a German insurance. For some insurance suggstions please see the link below.

All insurances of this type are limited in their coverage. Dental treatment, for example, is limited to a maximum yearly amount, and treatment of pre-existing conditions will not be paid. Consult the insurance's tariff information to be aware of the range of coverage!

Please note: if you are a scholarship holder, receiving a grant from a German research organisation such as DAAD or Humboldt Foundation, you should check whether you are going to be included in their health care plan. Often this is part of the scholarship.

3. You are a guest scientist, delegated from an EU country:
You remain insured under the health insurance system of your home institute. In order to have access to emergency medical treatment in Germany, you should arrange for the issuing of a blue-and-white European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
For longer periods of "posting" to Germany, you should obtain the "S1" certificate from your national health care provider to ensure full access to medical services here.
